VISITS & DISABILITY

Accessibility to the château
The château is an old medieval fortress built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire river. It is a listed historic monument, but does not meet all the modern requirements regarding access facilities. Nevertheless, the château has undertaken over the next few years to develop facilities in order to offer disabled visitors improved access.

Assistance in case of evacuation

In case of an incident, the evacuation signal will be given by a siren. The personnel, clearly identifiable in yellow jackets, is in charge of evacuating all members of the general public in a calm manner. The permanent staff, trained in first aid (AFPS) is able to assist the visitors in an initial emergency.

Mental disability

Visitors who are subject to this type of disability, will be able to follow the specially indicated tour and will be given an appropriate leaflet « Discovery visit ».
New in 2008 : the « discovery visit » (March 2008)
The Royal Château of Amboise was where the young kings spent their childhood.

Charles VIII, François I and the children of king Henri II and Catherine de Medici were all brought up here. Thus, the visitors discover for themselves « how to become a king? » by means of an educational leaflet (in French & in English) with some illustrations and a few anecdotes.

Hearing disability

Visitors subject to this type of disability may visit using the explanatory leaflet (available in 16 languages). The ticket office is equipped (Spring 2008) with a communication induction loop.

Sight disability

Visitors subject to this type of disability are exceptionally allowed to touch the articles in the collection and the decorations which are not too fragile. Security cordons may thus be opened on simple request to the security staff. The stairways are equipped with fixed handrails on the right-hand side. All doorsteps and covered passageways are well lit. There is a project to publish the signs throughout the visit in Braille in 2009.

Motor disability & reduced mobility

Visitors subject to this disability may access with their vehicle* the terraces of the château from where you have access to the Royal House, to Saint-Hubert’s Chapel (Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb) as well as the gardens.
Access to the ground floor of the Royal House is possible from the courtyard and access to the first floor from the garden (situated
between ground floor and first floor) where there is a straight staircase of just a few steps which is equipped with a foldaway ramp. Because of the spiral staircase, access to the second floor (XIXth century) is not possible for those in a wheelchair for the time being.

Special precautions :

*The château has a private entrance allowing access to the terraces. The visitor in question must be accompanied by a valid person who goes directly to the ticket office. Here, this person will be given the visit leaflet (in 16 languages) and the access map via the private entrance by car. The reception personnel will indicate to visitors where to go on arrival. Crossing isolated steps and slopes, as well as moving along gravel paths.
