The Valois
The last of the Capetians, Charles IV, died without an heir. One of his cousins, Philip of Valois (1293–1350), ascended to the throne, marking the beginning of the Valois dynasty. Charles V was one of his descendants.
The Bourbons Orléans
On 2 August 1589, Henry III, King of France, was assassinated by the Catholic monk Jacques Clément. With no heir, his cousin and brother-in-law Henry IV succeeded him in 1589. The Valois dynasty thus came to an end and the Bourbon dynasty began. This dynasty would give France eight kings.
